Why Holistically?

The word “holistic” has become a buzzword over the past years, especially in the wellness and healing industry. But what does holistic healing really mean and how does it differ from conventional western medicine?

Holistic refers to things related to the idea that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. It describes an approach which considers the entirety of something, rather than just its individual components. When put in the context of medicine and healing, it means that one need to recognize all aspects of a human, both her physical, psykological, emotional and energetic state, as well as the interconnectedness between these aspects, in order establish optimal wellbeing.

 A holistic health practitioner looks at all these aspects of a client, with the goal to address the root cause of an issue, to enhance overall wellbeing and to prevent future illness. The uniqueness of each person is being recognized and health needs addressed individually, most often through various types of natural remedies and healing techniques. The practitioner empowers the client with valuable insights and a toolbox of healing techniques, that will benefit the client for the rest of her/his life.

This holistic approach differs in many ways from conventional medicine, which emphasizes modern scientific advances and often uses medications or surgical procedures. When it comes to acute medical issues, such as infections and injuries, the western medicine really is necessary, but when looking at many of the health issues people are experiencing today, like anxiety, stress, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, skin ailments, fatigue, discomfort, sleep disturbances, food sensitivities, etc, conventional medicine faces some limitations. It has a narrower focus, primarily aiming to relieve symptoms and treat specific diseases. In many cases, it lacks the holistic approach of mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Within the Western medicine, pills and surgery are usually being recommended, instead of encouraging the body’s own healing process, through natural remedies and wellness practices.

Working with a holistic health practitioner is for those who are ready to embark on a great journey, a journey of knowing themselves and their bodies on a deeper level. It requires motivation and to some extent dedication, but there is a great reward; knowledge, empowerment and health.
